What is alpha?

Alpha is the second phase of the transactional service design and delivery process, and comes after discovery.

The purpose of alpha is to build prototypes of your service, test it with users and demonstrate that the service you want to build is technically and operationally possible. You also need to start the process of filling out the necessary paperwork, such as application forms and assessment reports so you don’t get slowed down by these sometimes lengthy processes later on.

Building an alpha prototype enables you to find problems with the design of your service, come up with ideas for how to solve those problems, make some estimates about how much it will cost to build the service from end-to-end, what it will take to operate, and identify risks and dependencies that may not have come up in discovery.
